If you hold temporary protection status, you receive the same statutory health coverage as German residents. Register your address first, then apply for insurance at the local Jobcenter or social office so you get your electronic health card within a few weeks.

Setting Up Insurance

  1. Complete your address registration (Anmeldung) at the Bürgeramt with your passport and rental contract.
  2. Take your residence permit and registration certificate to the Jobcenter or Sozialamt.
  3. Choose a public insurer such as AOK, TK or Barmer; they issue your eGK card by post.

Keep these documents ready in a folder:

  • Passport or national ID
  • Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)
  • Proof of address
  • Bank details for any small co-payments

Booking and Visiting a Doctor

Use the Doctolib app or call 116117 for non-emergency care. Search for Hausarzt practices that list Ukrainian or Russian speakers; many cities have walk-in hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Common situation What to do
GP visit for cold or check-up Book online, bring eGK, arrive 10 minutes early
Specialist referral needed Ask your Hausarzt for Überweisung, then book at the specialist
Medicine pickup Take prescription to any Apotheke; show eGK for reimbursement

If you need an interpreter, ask the practice in advance or bring a friend who speaks German. In an emergency, dial 112 and state your location clearly.
