Understanding Temporary Protection Status in the EU: What It Means for You

Temporary Protection Status lets people fleeing sudden conflict or disaster stay in the EU legally for a set period. You avoid asylum backlogs and gain quick access to work, school, and basic services in the host country.

If you hold a Ukrainian passport and left after February 2022, for example, you can register in Poland or Germany and start a job within weeks instead of waiting months for asylum papers.

Key rights and how to register

Registration happens at a local migration office or designated center. Bring your passport or national ID and proof of arrival date. Most countries issue a plastic card within two weeks that serves as your residence permit.

  • Work: You can sign a contract in any sector. A nurse from Kharkiv registered in the Netherlands started shifts at a hospital after one medical check.
  • School: Children enroll in public schools right away. No extra language tests required at first.
  • Health care: You receive the same basic coverage as locals in the registration country.
  • Travel: Short trips inside the Schengen area are allowed, but you must return before the card expires.

Check the expiry date on your card. The EU can extend the status in six-month blocks; renewal usually needs only a short form and current address.

  1. Find the nearest registration point on the host country’s migration website.
  2. Go in person with ID and a photo.
  3. Fill out the one-page form on site.
  4. Collect your card and open a local bank account for salary or benefits.
Country example Where to register Work start time
Germany Local Ausländerbehörde 1-3 weeks
Poland Urząd Wojewódzki or PESEL point Same week
Sweden Migrationsverket office 2-4 weeks

Keep copies of every document you submit. If your situation changes, such as a move to another EU country, notify the original registration office so your status stays valid.
